Scotch tape - not the answer?

Gartner analysts Martin Reynolds and Mike McGuire, apparently jealous of all the press Jupiter Research has been getting with this rootkit controversy, have announced that you can defeat the XCP DRM by putting a small piece of masking tape, about the size of a fingernail, over the edge of the the disc. Theoretically this renders the disc session that contains the DRM installer unreadable, allowing you to listen to the music without getting rootkitted.

In practice, the advice leaves a lot to be desired. The fine folks at the Register note that doing this could cause the CD to spin out of balance, possibly damaging either the disc or your drive.

Could you not just use a Sharpie to darken the edges?
