Join the EFF lawsuit

According to Boing Boing, the EFF is doing a plaintiff search for a lawsuit against Sony. Interested parties should meet the following criteria:

  1. you have a Windows computer;
  2. First 4 Internet’s “xcp” copy protection has been installed on yourcomputer from a Sony CD …
  3. you reside in either California or New York;
  4. you are willing to participate in litigation.

If you meet the criteria, email allison at

(Semi-confidential to Darian: I think item #3 above lets you out of this one, but let’s keep trying.)

    I think the revenue (presumably a settlement) on this could be huge. You should announce your intentions with regard to them

    At last Reuters has woken up to the story. A Reuters report is now on CNN among other places:

    To be fair, whether a legal requirement or not, I would personally add:

    5. (2) occurred without your knowledge

    Otherwise, we could have a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon here. I’m certainly boycotting sony, though :-)

    Matt C, good point.

    I’m not personally interested in joining a suit–I don’t meet most of these conditions–and I’m certainly not interested in making money off of any of this, as I probably have not made it clear.

    Excellent initiative. I really hope EFF gets involved and makes life miserable for the software geniuses who thought up this abortion.

    I’m telling all my clients and anyone else who will listen that Sony has reached a new low in rotten corporate behavior and deserve to have their products boycotted.

  6. Gavin Says:

    Well, I live in Europe but now that the virus designers have found a way to use Sony installation against us I hope Sony fries.

    I also hope artist start seeing these posting and realise what they will be loosing in lost sale when going through Sony.

    From what I have read elsewhere, the New York suit is open to anyone, no matter where they live - they are using a Federal criminal statute.
